  • 7 Dog Training Tips For The Pet Parent

Are you looking for ways to improve your relationship with your pet? Our Pet Brand Marketing Team share seven dog training tips that will help you do just that!

Make Dog Training A Positive Experience

Make sure your dog training is always a positive experience for your dog. Ensure you have the time and the focus to dedicate to your training session. Rushing home after work and trying to cram in a dog training session before dinner feels hurried, and your dog will sense this. It is better to save your more intensive training sessions for the weekends.

Decide On Your Training Methods

You can either use your voice as the cue as the ‘reward’ alongside the ‘treat’ or incorporate clicker training. Clicker training is a form of positive dog training. Clicker training allows for consistency and enables all the family to train in the same conscious way. Whether you own a new puppy or an older rescue dog, you can achieve equal success.

Choose A Reward

Is your dog motivated by tennis balls, a tasty treat, or even both?! Choose a reward in your training that your dog really loves. For food treats, choose something small and delicious that they are prepared to work hard for. Always finish each training session with something positive, such as a short walk or playtime fun in the garden.

Don’t Just Stick To Dog Training Commands

Whilst training your dog makes for a well-mannered obedient dog. It doesn’t mean you have to stop at the basic dog training commands. You can include fun training tricks such as ‘play dead’, ‘roll over and ‘bow’. Every dog should have a party trick so give your dog a few for added fun.

Teach This Fun Training Trick

Dog training can be enjoyable with this fun training exercise that they will love! To teach ‘the spin’, take a treat in your hand and encourage your dog’s nose to follow the treat in your hand until you complete a circle, then reward it with a treat. Repeat in the other direction. Your dog will quickly learn the hand signals for this one!

Train Your Dog With Distractions

Training your dog at home in familiar surroundings is an excellent place to start, but you will need to have control of your dog away from the home environment. Once you have trained your dog at home, you can test your training development in the local park. With walkers, other dogs, bikes and joggers, your local park will be a sensory overload for your dog. Getting and keeping his attention will be more of a challenge but will give you greater insight into areas you both need to work on!

Be A Pawsome Pet Parent

Remember not to get angry or frustrated when training your dog. Some dogs will be quicker to learn than others, and some dogs will find training more fun than other dogs. The key to successfully training your dog is to have fun together and remember that owning a dog is good for your health!
